General objectives

With the financial support from Direction générale de l'enseignement supérieur, Sino-Swiss Summer University is launched to develop leaders possessing competencies to work in Swiss and Chinese companies. Objective is to provide students with both insights into internationalization processes of Western and Eastern multinational corporations (MNCs) and into challenges faced in multicultural teams. This will be achieved through:

  1. Connecting globally:
    1. Chinese future leaders are put in touch with Swiss “hidden national champions”;
    2. Swiss future leaders are put in touch with Chinese national champions.
  2. Connecting academia: courses co-taught by Swiss and Chinese lecturers. Exchange of teaching and research.
  3. Connecting Chinese and Swiss students: group project and extracurricular activities.

Program and procedures


  • 3-14 July: Canton Vaud
  • 15-29 July: Shanghai


Courses will be delivered through team-teaching: Swiss and Chinese instructors. It will be composed of interactive, case based courses, seminars, workshops. Insights into cultural differences will be provided through shared experiences such as class discussions, group projects, or joint field trips. Students will work in mixed teams on a group project and various program related assignments. Corporate visits will also be organized to facilitate development of students’ global mindset and embracing of an ambicultural mode of management based on the “best-ofboth” in host and local cultures (Chen and Miller, 2010, 2011).

Overall the program will be composed of four modules:

  • Module 1: Managing across cultures: doing business in Switzerland
  • Module 2: Emerging global powers and internationalization
  • Module 3: Managing across cultures: doing business in China
  • Module 4: Multinational corporations innovating in China

Sino-Swiss Summer University in Business Administration is led by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. YOU Jianxin, Prof. Dr. Anna Lupina-Wegener and Prof. Dr. Juan Shan. Prof. Dr. ANNA LUPINA-WEGENER at the Haute Ecole d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud. She was previously a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Geneva (2006-2010), and she obtained her doctorate at the Warsaw School of Economics (2005). Prof. Dr. Anna Lupina-Wegener was a lecturer at the University of Geneva (2011/2012). She has also been a guest lecturer on cross-cultural management at the Graduate School of Management, St. Petersburg, Russia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal and University of Warsaw. Prof. Dr. Anna Lupina-Wegener’s key research interests relate to management issues in emerging economies: socio-cultural issues in mergers and acquisitions (HRM in Polish M&As; Merging in Mexico), managing multicultural teams (present: case of Chinese MNCs in Europe, Emerging-Market Banks in Europe), academic integrity (case of higher education institutions in Poland and Ukraine). Prof. Dr. Anna Lupina-Wegener’s research has been internationally published and presented at conferences. Prof. Dr. Juan SHAN works at School of Management, Shanghai University. She obtained her Ph.D degree from University Aix-Marseille (France) in 2010. She teaches strategic management, international business and brand management for both undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests related to innovation management in emerging economies, internationalization of Chinese firms and managing multicultural teams. Prof. Dr. Juan SHAN’s research has been internationally published and presented at conferences. Prof. Dr. Juan SHAN can be contacted at Dr. Mario KONISHI; PhD in Economics and social sciences (Geneva University). Mario participated in numerous research projects (Geneva university, Lausanne university, IDHEAP, IRDP in Neuchâtel). Since 2012, research- scientific collaborator at the Business Faculty at HEIG-VD. His current research focuses on human resource management and organizational behavior.
