Sulfur lamps offer high-quality efficient lighting. In all commercialized lamps of that kind, the bulb is maintained in rotation to avoid melting the glass. Researchers at HEIG-VD have found a sound alternative to avoid the bulb rotation. The innovation consists in modulating the magnetron in the radio frequency domain in order to put the plasma in ultrasonic resonance, which allows better performances. By pulsing the magnetron at low duty-cycle we have moreover found an amazing phenomenon: a mode of resonance that gathers the plasma into a ball. This behavior contrasts with all that was observed before. With the present setup, it is difficult to make it appear and difficult to sustain it as well. This project aims to develop a new setup in order to investigate this special acoustic resonance. We gratefully acknowledge the support from the Gebert Rüf Stiftung fondation.
